This month I realised the pub near me, The Green Dragon in Chesterton, Cambridge, was a haunt of Tolkein’s. I was thrilled. I read Lord of the Rings every five to ten years or so (and love the movies). Places like these, graced by writing legends, inspire me to keep my writing craft alive.

Where do you like to write?

As summer deepens, I’ve been enjoying trying my hand at 50 word stories. It is a fun writing focus, one in which every word counts. Here is one I’ve written around the theme of ‘sunset’. It is not so much a story with a plot, but more of a scene. I hope you enjoy it. And if you have a 50 word story (or scene) to share, please do!

Glass windows glint with gleaming orange on tall buildings that scrape sky. Pigeons coo; robins, tits and starlings chorus from little gardens. On the heath, wider-winged birds swoop in the last lengths of pink gold light. The sea is full of fire. Sunset touches everything, from cities to wild spaces.
