Writing Magic

My favourite books to write are about friendship, adventure and … magic. Why do I like to write about magic?

Those who stare into a fire for awhile find themselves stirred. Maybe by faces in the flames, maybe by the power and heat of it. Thoughts of phoenixes arising from ashes give hope for the new that can come out of endings.

Fire magic. Fluid, go-with-the flow, keep-flowing-like-a-river-and-eventually-you-will-make-a-canyon water magic. Tumbling, chaotic, wandering wind and solid, strong, growing earth. Everyday element magic.

And then there are trees. Passing by a tree dropping leaves in the fall makes me think of change. The bare-branched, sharp-spiked Blackthorn blooming white, delicate flowers after winter’s bite shows me the gentle and the tough can stand together.

Why do I write about magic? How can I not?

If you’re like me and like to read such stories, check out my five top picks for middle-grade books with girl-power and magic.

What five would you choose?
